Banner Blindness has been a problem thus causing most ads to be ignored and so advertisers have always tried to find how to catch the attention of users. New research on U.K internet users shows people pay attention to ads the most when they are researching for deals, shopping and using a search engine.
On the lower end most people said they were not at all likely to notice online ads while e-mailing or instant messaging, followed by watching online video and playing online games. However a large number of surveyed users also mentioned that they were not at all likely to pay attention to ads. source:Emarketeer

According to me the main reason for this kind of trend (of 'online shopping' and 'reserching...' scoreing high and 'e-mailing', 'reding news' etc. scoring low) is that the frame of mind the customer is while doing what he is doing. When a customer is 'Researching the best deal' she is keeping her options wide open, in-fact she is looking out for more options hence it is more likely for her to explore a new ad displayed on the web page. However a user interested in writing an e-mail is more often focused on the work on hand of writing/replying the mail. The motive here is different and hence the score.
Yup very well said and this one of the reasons why sites like facebook have struggled to make money of advertising
