CNBC-TV18 Boston Analytics Consumer Confidence Index is an interesting barometer of Indian Consumer Demand it is based on a survey of about 10,000 respondents who were interviewed face-to-face across 16 cities. According to the results it seems that bottom has been reached and consumers are now more confident of future than before but have still not yet started spending. Some of the key trends from the survey are
  1. Consumer Confidence Index has inched up 0.8% to 74.1 in April.
  2. The current situation index is up 0.1% to 71.4 while
  3. The future expectations index is up 0.6% to 77.6
  4.  For the period under review. April employment confidence is up 3.1% post the continuous fall for 10 months.
  5. Consumer spending confidence continues to weaken. It is down 7.2% in April
This is the first up tick after a continuous decline for nine months. The up ticks are signs of flattening, and are not to be read as trend reversal.Consumers in small towns are more confident
Despite the confidence in future conditions improving, consumers are not really spending. Consumers are not confident of the current situation but they are not anymore pessimistic than they were in the past few months.
Consumption
CNBC TV 18 also interviewed Kishore Biyani who said the urban population is feeling more secure than before, while consumption of new products and items in smaller towns is a positive and healthy sign. He also said
There is a little more dip in Bangalore than in any other city and that seems to have not yet revived back as much as we thought it should revive back. I would say Mumbai and Delhi not impacted much at all. Chennai we don’t have big presence but Chennai is not impacted in a sense but Bangalore yes, definitely there has been an impact. Hyderabad has bounced back very strongly.
