Okay First thing First what I feel is that most of Doomsayers are predicting these scenarios since they think in terms of American market however Indian market is more closer to rapidly exploding Chinese market which estimated at $137mn is nearly 4times Indian market of 37 million. As this NY times report talks In the Chinese market the need is entertainment rather than Information which is the primary focus of American market and out of the number of users 70% are below 30 years old compared to America which has 70% users above the age of 30.In India also 93% of users are below 35 years old according to IMAI and there is a desperate need for entertainment websites across India across campuses in India I have seen students who are willing to spend more time on net but there is no place to hang out besides Orkut which is more of a timepass rather than a hangout. There are quite a few millions people who are willing to be hooked to net if you give them a reason only thing that needs to be taken care is that content shud be desi so that it appeals to masses which is the reason why sumone wud go to Rediff rather than a Yahoo for relevant news and articles for India however wat seems to be happening is a me too websites which will not lead to anything.
Success stories
Though Starting as a commercial medium for HLL it has added 568960 users mostly females only and its sucess has meant it being turned into more web2.0 with user genrated content thus forming a niche for itself.
Another Example though not of a web2.0 but more of a discussion board turning into a hangout place for youth interested in MBA is pagalguy.com almost 70% of a batch of MBA's in the country have been to pagalguy and a lot of them continue to hangout there after getting into Bschool (something which I can vouch for).Thru all this i have tried to show that the gap is there (in MBA terms) and it needs to be filled who will be next baitu or qq from India(both these sites are Chinese but are in Alexa global top 10)
Finally the most heartening thing is this piece of article from Economictimeswhich tells that govt of India is planning to give free broadband Internet to all citizens of India by 2009 now that will surely improve the numbers if the content is there
P.S Infact our need of entertainment is so heavy that can be gauged by the fact that this blog gets its highest hits from label Makkadman who must be searchng for entertainment
