Trying to stay ahead of the technology curve is a difficult job and analyzing what is going to be the next hot thing in technology in the future is even more so however Richard Macmanus of Read Write Web has been doing a great job of it and embedded below is a ppt of his on Web Technology Trends for 2008 and beyond. In this ppt he talks about ideas that would answer the question as to what is going to be Web3.0 , the answer according to him is web services, Semantic Apps, Open Data, Mobile Web and Recommendation Engines.
These are interesting ideas with lots of companies working on them however going beyond these ideas there are other questions to be answered as to what is going to be next in search
and we can actually see that there are 8 different kinds of search engines already under development
  1. Artificial Intelligence (e.g. Hakia, Powerset)
  2. People Powered Search (e.g. del.icio.us, ChaCha)
  3. Vertical Search (e.g. SimplyHired, Technorati)
  4. Personalized Search (e.g. Collarity)
  5. Clustering (e.g. Clusty, SearchMash)
  6. Social Search (e.g. Eurekster, Rollyo)
  7. Visualization (e.g. Quintura and Kartoo)
  8. Previews (Snap, Live Image Search)
While most of these ideas are already in action it will take some time for these ideas to become mainstream. In Indian context we are still working with mostly web 1.0 websites and only now the companies are moving to web 2.0 however there are some relevant ideas like the mobile web on which a bunch of startups are betting big and the growth of vertical search engines which is being backed by startups like iXigo and recommendation engines which need significant growth in web analytics in India which is however being driven by some interesting startups like Antya which is trying to bet big on the concept of discovery. Its difficult to say how it will play out and which technologies will finally make the cut but do drop in with your ideas also in the comments
