India’s largest IT solutions provider Tata Consultancy Services has done a survey across 14,000 high-school children between the ages of 12-18 in 12 cities across India during 2008-09 and has come up with some very interesting facts. Here are the key highlights
  • 63 per cent of urban students spend over an hour online daily
  • 93 per cent are aware of social networking
  • Orkut and Facebook are most popular online destinations
  • 46 per cent use online sources to access news; TV, newspaper users at 25 per cent
  • 62 per cent have a personal computer at home
  • 1 in 4 students own laptops in metros; 2 of 3 own music players
  • IT and engineering remain overwhelming popular career choices
  • Media and Entertainment, Travel and Tourism are emerging careers
  • USA, UK top list of international destinations for higher studies
  • The survey says Kolkata leads the pack in the usage of Wikipedia (31 per cent) for information sourcing.
This is a known fact in the online world that a huge amount of internet going population is from students and this survey confirms that but what is surprising is the level of penetration and this tells that in the future when this demographic grows up it will definately drive internet's growth as a transaction medium. These figures are very impressive.
Now it is up to the online marketeers to woo these young consumers early. As is done by Pepsi to 'catch them young'; marketing strategies targetting these kids would not only help in sustainable brand building but also will help in making them a loyal consumer base on a longer run. Nice article!!
