Nivio an Indian company has launched a window based online desktop .The service of Nivio is free for first month and thereafter it costs Rs 399/month for normal users and Rs 199/month for students. What Nivio claim to have is "global access to a personal virtual desktop from any Internet-connected device".What they offer is 5 GB of storage, and all the standard desktop features such as file back-up, virus and spam protection along with this they have free bundle of software tools including the ``OpenOffice'' suite, the Outlook Express email tool and the Internet Explorer browser. Also on offer are Acrobat 8 reader, iTunes and Winamp players, Yahoo Messenger, and for ``Open'' software lovers: the choice of a Mozilla/Firefox browser and the Foxit Reader as told to Hindu.
Nivio claims to be World's first Online desktop and have also been covered in many Indian magazines but this concept is not entirely new it is a variation of something called web desktop and seems similar to concept of windows own remote desktop. A webdesktop is virtual desktop on the web running in a browser as a software and allows users to save their work over internet rather than desktop thus preventing data loss there are many free opensource products available for this and even Google's docs & spreadsheets is a similar concept.
However what Nivio seems to have added is the linkage to one's own desktop here instead of carrying your own desktop you can just login via Nivio and access one's own desktop data and application just as it is.This seems something like a remote desktop feature available in windows however Nivio allows access via any computer maybe even from cyber cafe .However there are some serious concerns about using it first is security and second is need of very high speed net for it .At least in india this will take sometime to catch up because any kind of remote access needs a very fast broadband connection and even 256 KBps is slow for this as reported by Webyantra in its review of Nivio.More information about various kinds of webdesktops and Nivio is present on Wiki here.
